Recently, non-profits have used many bots in place of their human members to scaffold collaborations with citizens. However, this shift invites new challenges: it is difficult for outsiders to understand the joint effort that bots have now initiated with humans, limiting the goals reached collectively. To help non-profits coordinate the volunteers recruited by online bots, we propose BotViz. BotViz is a new online platform that via data visualizations provides outsiders a clear understanding of the interactions of bots with volunteers. Our data visualization presents two benefits related to traditional interfaces: 1) Diversity, wherein people can understand the diversity of the volunteers, especially their unique strengths; 2) Stalling, wherein people who may be delaying the collective effort triggered by bots can be easily identified by volunteers. Together, our data visualizations point to a future where humans and online bots can better collaborate in order to have large scale impact.

متن کاملA Data-Driven Study of DDoS Attacks and Their Dynamics
Despite continuous defense efforts, DDoS attacks are still very prevalent on the Internet. In such arms races, attackers are becoming more agile and their strategies are more sophisticated to escape from detection. Effective defenses demand in-depth understanding of such strategies. In this paper, we set to investigate the DDoS landscape from the perspective of the attackers. We focus on the dy...
متن کاملBots are Users, Too! Rethinking the Roles of Software Agents in HCI
Increasingly sophisticated autonomous software agents called ’bots’ roam throughout the Internet, performing a wide variety of tasks, some for good and some for evil. Yet while autonomous, these bots are not artificial intelligences, instead programmed to perform mundane, routine tasks that would otherwise be impossible by humans. Useful bots crawl the web for search engines, enforce order in I...

learned from our collaborations with artists on visualization problems at Brown University’s Visualization Research Lab. Over the past several years, we have worked closely with artists to develop, refine, and critique visualizations ranging from archaeological dig data from the Great Temple of Petra site in Jordan to the fluid dynamics and wing bone shape deformations that begin to explain how...
متن کاملWearable tag clouds: visualizations to facilitate new collaborations
We describe the development and pilot testing by university faculty of Wearable Tag Clouds as a CSCL technology. Tag Clouds are ‘at-a-glance’ information visualizations that, in the wearable form developed here, repurpose social web technologies to support face-to-face interactions. Exploration of collaborative prospects is facilitated by visualizing the substantive emphases of researchers’ wri...
